Sterling had planted a seed. Beth could say what she wanted about him not knowing her. Maybe she wasn’t the woman he’d married thirteen years ago, but she was then and would always be his woman. No matter how much time passed, he knew his woman. Beth melted in the chair next to him at the brief, and unexpected, touch of their lips. Before he left, she hinted at still loving him, now he knew he could still turn her on. Oh, it was on. He would save his marriage.

Molly spun in a circle on the stage. Funny, how he watched her in practice a few times a week and never learned the progression of the dance. When it was her time for a solo, she leapt to the center of the stage with three leaps from the corner. Her arms extended over her head creating a circle, then she pointed one toe out with her hands flowing down. The solo lasted less than a minute before the next little girl had her time in the spotlight, but Sterling didn’t care. No other child was more graceful or beautiful as his. Beth and his, they’d made a family anyone in the world would be jealous of and he wasn’t going to let it go and walk away. The most telling thing Beth had said in their fights was we’ve put us in this place. She wasn’t blaming him for destroying their marriage. The demise of their marriage was on both of them, which meant if they wanted things to change, it would take both of them to fight for what they once had.

“We have a surprise,” Beth’s mother said as they gathered with Molly being a star in the middle. Beth was trying to get Molly to switch from ballet slippers to boots. “We got tickets to the matinee for the Nutcracker.”

“Really!” Molly exclaimed with wide eyes.

Another round of ballet, Sterling assumed he needed to get used to it. Molly was just starting out and had no intention of quitting. Beth’s expression surprised him. Dread mixed with a hint of frustration. He thought she would be happy to be out and not having to play Becky Home-ecky.

“When will we need to be downtown?” she asked going into planning mode.

“That’s the best part,” his own mother added. “You don’t. Just the grandparents and grandbabies are going. You two are off the hook.”

“Wow, thanks,” Beth said. “Molly, if you don’t take off those slippers, you won’t be going anywhere.”

“Yes mommy,” Molly whined, plopping to the floor causing rainbows to shoot off the sparkles from her tutu.

“And we’re taking them tonight to go Christmas shopping,” Sterling’s dad added. “It seems the Simpsons have a suite downtown. That’s why we didn’t take our bags out of the car.”

“Those tickets are almost impossible to get,” Beth accused her father. “How long ago did you buy those?”

“Did you have something else planned?” her mother asked not willing to allow Beth’s father to answer.

Sterling could tell by the way the four parents were acting they were all in on this plan.
